"I think in all fairness, I should explain to you exactly what it is that I do. You cross me, I'll crack your fuckin' head wide-open. And just about the time that I'm comin' out of jail, hopefully, you'll be coming out of your coma. And guess what? I'll split your fuckin' head open again. 'Cause I'm fuckin' stupid. I don't give a fuck about jail. That's my business. That's what I do.
A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all fuckin' night.
The coppers blamed me for every little thing out here in Vegas, and I mean every little fuckin' thing. If a guy fuckin' slipped on a fuckin' banana peel, they blamed me."
Nicky Santoro was born in Chicago on May 19, 1938. His family was good to him and he was doing well at school. Nevertheless, he decided to drop out. He joined a gang of other dropouts from the same school and started performing petty crimes such as shoplifting and mugging.
He was caught for the first time on January 11, 1955 for stealing a t-shirt and was fined $10 and given probation. Over the next five years, Santoro was arrested another twelve times. By this time Nicky had decided that he wanted to move onto bigger things, so he joined the La Cosa Nostra family.
Nicky started out as a debt collector. He performed his job so well that he moved up quickly and was given his first hit contract. In 1962, Nicky joined three other mobsters in torturing and murdering two individuals: Bill McCartney and Jimmy Miraglia. Nicky put McCartney's head in a vice and tightened it until his eye popped out, giving him huge notoriety among the other gangsters. He was "made" by the family in 1963 and joined Felix Alderisio's group.
Nicky was immediately put in charge of a bookmaking territory and, after running it successfully for a year, he was sent to Miami. In Miami, he protected a handicapper, and made sure that no other families muscled their way in on family businesses there.
In 1967, he was brought back to Chicago for 4 years, where he continued making a name for himself. In 1971 Nicky was sent to Las Vegas. Nicky took care of quite a few loose ends, torturing and murdering at least five people, a few of which were found in the desert. It was here that he truly shored up his relationship with Sam Rothstein, a bookmaker and now sucessful Casino Manager, fronted for the family.
In 1972, Nicky was indicted in a murder case.
Almost immediately after the end of this case, there was another indictment, this time with Joseph Lombardo for another murder, but they took out the witness and were acquitted of all charges.
Finally free of court cases, Nicky was able to make sure the casino's skim operation was running smoothly and that no scam operations were run by other mobsters. Santoro was reunited with his pal Sam Rothstein and worked with him extensively on protecting The Tangiers and other interests.
In 1979, Nicky was put in the black book, meaning that he could no longer step foot in a Las Vegas casino. He was very angry, but continued to run his business in the city. Nicky started a gang called "The Hole in the Wall" Gang that was notorious for making holes in walls to steal jewelry from stores. Things were going very well and Nicky was gaining power.
We meet Nicky as he runs the "Hole In The Wall" in Vegas and continues to protect Sam, Ginger and The Tangiers from the interests of others.
